Three colors to add vibrancy

A "challenge" to traditional techniques

In Japan, glass forming and processing are said to have begun about 2,000 years ago. One of the representative techniques in glass art is "blown glass."

In this technique, molten glass is wound onto the end of a metal pipe and then shaped by blowing air into it. Since this process basically results in round-shaped glass, creating square shapes is said to be very difficult.

Against this conventional wisdom, Kenji Matsuura, a glass artisan at Sghr Sugahara, a glass manufacturer in Kujukuri, Chiba Prefecture, took on the unprecedented challenge of "absolutely wanting to create square glass!"

Starting with the creation of a cube-shaped mold, he underwent approximately three years of trial and error, adjusting the apex, mouth, and thickness of each part. Through his insatiable curiosity, new possibilities for blown glass were discovered, and this product was born.

Overwhelming beauty designed by glass artisans themselves

The "Cubo Cube Vase" was designed by glass artisan Matsuura himself. Sghr does not have a dedicated product development designer.

This is because they believe that only artisans, who have spent a long time with glass and understand it thoroughly, can maximize its appeal by designing it themselves.

Sugahara Glass Co., Ltd. was founded in 1932. Through a development research group formed by volunteer employees, about 30 artisans take the lead in bringing their self-designed glass works to the world.

Although works filled with the thoughts and stories of each artisan are born every year, they share one common idea: "to bring the beauty of glass into everyday tools."
