Three varieties to warm your heart during the cold season

Onigurumi, or Japanese Walnut, is a type of walnut with a rough, hard shell, as its name suggests (Oni meaning "demon" or "ogre" and kurumi meaning "walnut"). Its flower meanings include "enamored with you" and "moment of bliss."

It is a native Japanese species that has been consumed since the Jomon period, but its current domestic distribution is said to be less than 1%, making it a phantom nut.

The rugged form of its thick shell conveys a sense of strength enduring the cold.

Huayruro, native to the Amazon rainforests of South America, is characterized by its bright red seeds. Since the time of the ancient Inca Empire, these mystical seeds have been considered a charm against evil.

While winters in its native region are not as cold as in Japan, its plump silhouette and vivid red color bring a sudden warmth to the heart.

Gettou (shell ginger) is a relative of ginger that grows wild in Okinawa and East Asia. It is said that this beautiful name was given to it because its leaves are crescent-shaped and its buds resemble peaches.

In Okinawa, there is a custom on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month to pray for children's health and protection from illness by eating mochi (rice cakes) wrapped in gettou leaves (known as "Muuchee").

The way it carefully protects its seeds evokes a sense of tenderness every time you see it.
