Hanamochi "Namida" to bring joy to the New Year

After an unseasonably warm spell, the end of 2025 is here, and the cold has begun to set in.

This year, we are once again offering our highly popular Hanamochi "Namida" in limited quantities.

The New Year, with its reunions with relatives and friends, is eagerly anticipated!

These adorable red and white hanamochi will charmingly heighten that excited feeling.

Hanamochi are auspicious decorations displayed during the New Year (especially Little New Year). It is said that they originated around the Edo period in snowy regions where flowers did not bloom in winter, as a practice to pray for bountiful harvests and happiness.

The mochi scattered on the branches look just like red and white plum blossoms.

They are made by women in the production area who attach mochi to well-branched dried branches (mainly maple).

Since they are dried floral materials, there is no need to place them in water.

As the name "Namida" (tears) suggests, don't these tiny pieces evoke a sense of affection?

We also visited Hida-Takayama, the production area.

Namida's production area is Hida-Takayama, known for its heavy snowfall.

After the main local agricultural products, tomatoes and spinach, have been shipped, the production of hanamochi begins.

The Namida workshop is located in a traditional house over 200 years old. The magnificent pine trees evoke a sense of history.

In the workshop, local women of various ages are carefully kneading and attaching small pieces of mochi, about the size of a fingertip, one by one.

The mochi used is freshly made every day, and it takes about 30-45 minutes to finish one branch.

Once completed, they are dried in the workshop for several days before being shipped all over Japan.

Hanamochi, a treasured regional tradition, can be displayed from New Year's to the Doll's Festival. Please experience the hanamochi culture that brightens the long winters of snowy regions.
