New Year's Decorations with Winter Branches to Invite Sacred New Year's Air

The end and beginning of the year are particularly important milestones.

How about New Year's decorations with a wish for a fruitful new year?

New Year's decorations can be displayed anytime after December 13th, the day when New Year's preparations traditionally begin.

Many families display them from December 26th, after Christmas, but choosing the 28th, which symbolizes "everlasting prosperity," is also a good option. It is best to avoid the 29th, which evokes "suffering," and the 31st, as it becomes a "one-night decoration."

This year, we offer two types with different silhouettes. For the pine, essential for New Year's decorations to "await" and "worship" the gods, we chose the long-tailed Oomatsu (Japanese white pine).

Both come with a wire hook, so you can display them immediately after receiving them.

"Hisho" (Soaring), where the vibrant green fern looks like spread wings.

The New Year itself is an event to welcome the "Toshigami-sama" (New Year God) with a wish for a bountiful harvest in the coming year.

It is said that by displaying shimenawa (sacred straw rope), a sacred boundary is created, and Toshigami-sama can visit the home with peace of mind.

Since rice ears, the material of shimenawa, are considered a symbol of the rice paddy gods, they are perfect for expressing wishes for a bountiful harvest, such as "May we eat delicious food again next year and live healthily."

The red berries in the center are Nanten (heavenly bamboo), said to "turn misfortune into good fortune."

The cute, round gourds are also considered a good luck charm, said to invite prosperity for descendants due to their many seeds.

Materials used: Oomatsu (Japanese white pine), Nebiki-matsu (pulled pine root), Hinoki (Japanese cypress), Otafukunanten (dwarf heavenly bamboo), Nanten (heavenly bamboo), Matsukasa (pine cones), Hyotan (gourd), Yamashida (mountain fern), Inaho (rice ears)

"Enmusubi" (Matchmaking) inviting good fortune with red and white mizuhiki

"Enmusubi" (Matchmaking), which seems to attract good connections with abundant red and white mizuhiki (decorative paper cords).

Its slender silhouette is accented by the red, spark-like berries of Sankirai (Smilax china).

The mizuhiki decoration and washi paper at the base add a pure and clean touch.
