This is the time when winter truly begins. It is read "Taisetsu," not "Ōyuki."
Mountains become covered in snow, and it is said that snow begins to fall even in flatland areas.
December 13th is considered "Oshogatsu Koto Hajime" (the start of New Year's preparations), an auspicious day to begin getting ready for the New Year. Start little by little with cleaning and gathering pine branches.

Approx. December 7 - 10: "Sora Samuku Fuyu to Naru" (Heavens heavy, winter begins)
Approx. December 11 - 15: "Kuma Ana ni Komoru" (Bears hibernate in their dens)
Approx. December 16 - 20: "Sake no Uo Muragaru" (Salmon gather in schools)
It is the time when the sky is blocked by heavy clouds, hibernating animals begin their winter sleep, and salmon return to their home rivers.
Daikon radishes, available year-round, are in season around Taisetsu. If your stomach isn't feeling well after a series of year-end parties, why not refresh yourself with grated daikon?
