[Branch & Foliage Encyclopedia | Winter] Otafuku Nanten (Otafuku Heavenly Bamboo)

Hello everyone,

SiKiTO's "Branch Subscription" service delivers the best branches selected by professionals, depending on the weather and stock availability at the time.

The branch we're introducing this time is 'Otafuku Nanten' (Heavenly Bamboo).

It's an evergreen shrub of the barberry family (Berberidaceae), genus Nandina. It's a dwarf cultivar created by improving Nandina to keep its height low.

Its name comes from its rounded leaves resembling 'Otafuku' (a traditional Japanese mask with a plump, smiling face), and it's also known as Okame Nanten. Its flower language, like Nandina, means "good family" and "bringing good fortune."

It's a popular good luck charm often used during New Year's celebrations.

Unlike regular Nandina, it rarely produces flowers or berries. From autumn onwards, its leaves turn into a beautiful blend of red, orange, and yellow hues.

As a good luck charm believed to "turn difficulties around," it's also available as a cut branch in December. Unusually for cut branches, it mainly comes in smaller sizes of 30-50 cm.
