Doesn't the word "bonsai" give you the impression that it's more for advanced plant enthusiasts than general houseplants, and perhaps a bit too soon for you? SiKiTO staff, to be honest, felt the same way.

This misconception was overturned by the bonsai from "Ishikiya," who readily agreed to this collaboration.

In fact, bonsai that match modern lifestyles have recently been gaining attention, and enthusiasts, especially young women, are increasing. Even overseas, "BONSAI" has become a widely understood term for Japanese culture.

The charm of bonsai lies in being able to closely admire the dynamic changes of the four seasons within a pot.

Leaves unfurl on a tree grown in a small pot, then bear fruit, shed their leaves, and eventually bloom. Its ever-changing appearance throughout the 365 days is truly a "miniature garden."

Caring for Ishikiya bonsai is surprisingly easy!

The basic care involves watering every 1-2 days. Place it in a spot with good sunlight and ventilation throughout the year.

Pruning is done once or twice a year to shape the tree and encourage new growth. Liquid fertilizers and other nutrients are also effective during the spring and autumn growing seasons.

Arranging several together creates a truly charming scene.

Komurasaki, named after a historical literary figure

It is a relative of "Murasaki Shikibu," which bears elegant purple fruits in autumn, and is called "Komurasaki Shikibu" (little Murasaki Shikibu) or simply "Komurasaki" due to its small fruits.

It is widely believed that its name comes from the dignified appearance associated with Murasaki Shikibu, the talented literary figure known for The Tale of Genji.

As of mid-August when the photo was taken, the fruits were still a fresh green. Upon closer inspection, some had just begun to change color.

They will gradually deepen in color as autumn progresses, turning purple around October to November.

Even after the leaves fall, the fruits remain on the branches, allowing you to admire their antique charm in winter.

Komurasaki available in 2 sizes

① Large size | Approx. 6 years old

The pot color is "Hakutou" (white ceramic), a smooth white. The "Wakakusa" (light green) saucer matches the pale leaf color.

② Extra-large size | Approx. 15 years old

The pot color is the same "Hakutou" (white ceramic) as the large size. The "Shiranami" (white waves) saucer evokes images of swaying wind.

From around October, its leaves turn red, allowing you to enjoy autumn foliage at home.

This popular standard tree species offers captivating changes from spring new growth, summer green, autumn foliage, to winter defoliation.

② Shinpaku Juniper | Shinpaku

Native to limestone mountainous regions across Japan, it is a popular standard tree species in the bonsai world, alongside pines. It is an evergreen with foliage throughout the year, but its leaf tips turn orange in autumn and winter.

While larger ones exude the dignity of "THE Bonsai," smaller ones possess a delicate charm.

③ Firethorn | Tokiwa-sanzashi

Its slender evergreen leaves create a light impression. Small white flowers bloom in spring, and the fruit dramatically changes color from green to red from summer to autumn.

It is also sturdy and easy for beginners to cultivate.

④ Komurasaki | Komurasaki

Komurasaki, said to be named after Murasaki Shikibu, bears elegant small purple fruits. Pale purple flowers bloom in spring, and the fruit turns deep purple in autumn.

Rōyagaki possesses both charming, acorn-like fruits and a dignified, bonsai-like presence. This time, we offer magnificent specimens of about 10-12 years old.

Open the Door to Nature: Bonsai Specialty Store "Ishikiya"

Ishikiya is a bonsai brand based in Murayama City, Yamagata Prefecture. SiKiTO's representative fell in love with their beautiful and refined bonsai at first sight, leading to this collaboration.

All bonsai are carefully cultivated by Ishikiya staff with time and effort.

One of Ishikiya's unique charms is their gently shaped pots, all of which are handmade in-house.

Around 50 original colors are given elegant names such as "Hakusame" (white rain) and "Shingyoku" (deep emerald).

The "Seasons and Bonsai" collaboration with Ishikiya is planned to be sold for a limited time each season.
