When you hear "bonsai," do you get the impression that it's more for advanced plant enthusiasts than typical houseplants, and perhaps a bit too early for you? To be honest, the SiKiTO staff felt the same way.

This preconceived notion was overturned by the bonsai from "Ishiki Hanam" who readily agreed to this collaboration.

In fact, recently, bonsai that match modern lifestyles have been gaining attention, and the number of enthusiasts, especially young women, is increasing. Even overseas, "BONSAI" has become a widely understood term in Japanese culture.

The charm of bonsai lies in being able to admire the dynamic changes of the four seasons up close in a pot.

Leaves unfold, fruits bear, leaves fall, and eventually flowers bloom on a tree growing from a small pot. Its ever-changing appearance throughout 365 days is truly a "miniature garden."

Caring for Ishiki Hanam's bonsai is surprisingly easy!

The basic care involves watering every 1-2 days. Throughout the year, place it in a well-lit and airy spot.

Pruning is done once or twice a year to shape the tree and promote new growth. During the spring and autumn growing seasons, liquid fertilizers and other nutrients are also effective.

Arranging several together creates a truly endearing scene.

Large-sizedロウヤガキ (Loyagaki) with increasing rarity

The Japanese name for this tree is "Loyagaki" (老爺柿), which is a variation of "Rōyagaki" (老鴉柿) due to its fruits, which are rich in tannin and turn black in winter.

Please enjoy watching the fruit change color from green to orange to black.

In recent years, it has become an increasingly rare tree species as the number of growers continues to decline.

This time, we have prepared an impressive 10-12 year old tree. The pot color is a dignified "shinpeki" (deep green), and the saucer is a light "shiranami" (white wave) to create a contrast.

For autumn 2025, there are five types of "Seasons and Bonsai," including Komurasaki. All are available in limited quantities.

① Yama Momiji (Mountain Maple)

The leaves begin to turn red around October, allowing you to enjoy autumn foliage at home.

This is a popular standard tree species that offers captivating changes from spring new shoots, summer green, autumn foliage, to winter defoliation.

② Shinpaku Juniper

Naturally found in limestone mountainous areas throughout Japan, it's a popular standard bonsai species alongside pine. It's an evergreen that maintains its foliage year-round, but its leaf tips turn orange from autumn to winter.

Larger ones exude the dignified appearance of "THE Bonsai," while smaller ones have a delicate charm.

③ Tokiwa-Sanzashi (Evergreen Firethorn)

The slender evergreen leaves give it a light impression. In spring, small white flowers bloom, and the fruit dramatically changes color from green to red from summer to autumn.

It's a robust tree species, making it easy for beginners to cultivate.

④ Komurasaki (Japanese Beautyberry)

Komurasaki, said to be named after Murasaki Shikibu, bears elegant small purple fruits. Pale purple flowers bloom in spring, and the fruits turn deep purple in autumn.

Even after the leaves fall, the fruits remain on the branches, allowing you to admire their antique charm in winter.

Opening the Door to Nature: Ishiki Hanam Bonsai Specialty Store

Ishiki Hanam is a bonsai brand based in Murayama City, Yamagata Prefecture. The SiKiTO representative fell in love at first sight with their beautiful and refined bonsai, leading to this collaboration.

All bonsai are carefully cultivated by Ishiki Hanam staff with time and effort.

One of the unique charms of Ishiki Hanam is their gently shaped pots, all of which are produced in-house.

Approximately 50 original colors are given evocative names such as "Shiraame" (White Rain) and "Shinpeki" (Deep Green).

The "Seasons and Bonsai" collaboration with Ishiki Hanam is planned for limited-time sales each season.
