Characteristics of Dodan Azalea

Dodan Azalea is a deciduous broadleaf tree belonging to the Enkianthus genus of the Ericaceae family. As a quintessential branch plant, Dodan Azalea, with its charming small leaves and refreshing appearance, is very popular as a summer interior decoration.

Native to Japan and Taiwan, it originally grew wild in western Japan and was then cultivated and spread throughout the country. It is said that the name "Dodan Azalea" came from "Todai Tsutsuji" (lighthouse azalea), as its branching pattern resembles the legs of an old Japanese lighthouse.

Our regular branch delivery service sends Dodan Azalea during the season of fresh greenery, and in spring, it produces small white bell-shaped flowers that hang from its branches.

When in full bloom, the myriad of white flowers evokes a starry sky, leading to the phonetic equivalent "Mantenboshi" (満天星), which is also read as "Mantenboshi Tsutsuji" (満天星躑躅).

Its charm also lies in how its appearance changes with the seasons: cute flowers in spring, beautiful refreshing new leaves in summer, and brilliant red foliage in autumn.

No special tricks are needed when displaying Dodan Azalea. Simply placing branches in a large vase will bring vibrant green into your room, creating a refreshing and bright atmosphere throughout the space.

[By Location] Stylish and Impressive Ways to Display Branches

One of the charms of branch plants is that their impression changes greatly depending on where and how they are displayed. We will introduce stylish ways to display branch plants in five locations: living room, dining room, kitchen, entryway, and washroom.

Decorating the living room with branches

The living room, often the main room of the house, is spacious, allowing you to fully utilize the expanse of the branches. By displaying large, impactful branches, you can create a sense of openness that makes the entire space feel larger.

When arranging branches to spread out, it's important to choose a heavy vase. Select a stable and sturdy container to prevent it from toppling over.

It's also recommended to place branches next to a sofa or by a low table in a relaxing space.

This will make your relaxation time more pleasant and add the gentle touch of nature to your life.

Decorating the dining table with branches

For the dining room, where you enjoy meals, compact-sized branches are recommended.

When decorating the center of a dining table, a volume that doesn't obstruct the placement of plates and glasses is just right, and a light, airy branching pattern will be particularly striking.

Arranging branches slightly diagonally to flow outwards adds a natural movement, making everyday life more vibrant.

If it's difficult to place them on the dining table, decorating a nearby counter is also recommended. It will be easily visible to family members and safe even in homes with small children.

Decorating the kitchen with branches

For the kitchen, small and simple branches are perfect. To avoid obstructing the cooking space, even just cutting them short and placing one branch in a vase will completely change the atmosphere.

If placed in a sunny spot like a windowsill or next to the stove, the branches will be illuminated by sunlight, giving an even fresher impression. This can make cooking time a little more enjoyable.

Decorating the entrance with branches

Placing fresh branches in your entryway not only soothes your mood the moment you return home but also leaves a stylish and cohesive impression on guests.

Consider choosing a large vase that can be placed on the floor and boldly displaying long branches. You can enjoy the natural presence as if a small tree stands indoors.

If space is limited in your entryway, simply decorating a chair or shoe cabinet with slightly shorter branches can create an elevated, stylish living experience.

Decorating the washroom with branches

By decorating your washroom, where you begin and end your day, with branches, you can refresh your mood in fleeting moments and feel invigorated.

For compact spaces, slender and simple branches are recommended. If displayed in a clear glass vase, the beauty of the water will also stand out, creating a clean impression.

Just adding branches to a small space, such as next to a mirror or on the corner of the washbasin, can infuse your daily routine with the healing power of nature◎

Precautions when arranging in a vase

When arranging in a vase, the key point is to cut the branches to fit the vase while considering the overall balance. If displayed too long, the branches may spread out excessively and be difficult to arrange neatly.

Cut the bottom 2-3 centimeters of the stem diagonally to perform "mizuage" (water absorption technique) before arranging. This extra step increases the surface area that absorbs water, helping the branches last longer. When making cuts in the branches, it's recommended to use pruning shears designed for branches and woody plants◎

How to Care for Dodan Azalea

Dodan azaleas are highly resistant to cold and heat, and you can enjoy their changes for a long time, from spring flowers to summer greenery and autumn foliage. To enjoy your Dodan azalea branches beautifully for even longer, a little daily care is essential◎

Here are the basic care instructions for branches.

Basic Care

1. Trim upon receipt

Trimming

Trim the branches on the day they arrive before arranging them in a vase.

At this time, make a cross-shaped incision at the base of the branch and peel off the bark to allow more efficient water absorption.

Also, to make branches last longer, it is recommended to use water containing a freshness preservative! It prevents water from getting dirty, keeps the flower colors vibrant, and is expected to make the branches last longer.

■ Freshness Preservative for Branches

Freshness Preservative

Would you like to try a freshness preservative to provide essential nutrients to your branches and keep the water in your vase clean? It has the effect of dissolving sap at the cut ends to improve water absorption, allowing you to enjoy your branches for longer.

Branch-specific freshness preservatives can be found here.

■ Florist Knife for Better Water Absorption

2. Display in a comfortable spot for branches

Branches are best placed in a well-ventilated, cool spot away from air conditioner drafts.

Avoid direct sunlight and choose a comfortable location for your branches.

Whether in the living room, entryway, or kitchen, they have a presence that can change the impression of any space. They are also recommended for bedrooms and washrooms◎

3. Change the water frequently

Water change

Change the water frequently before it becomes cloudy. At that time, recutting the branches will help them absorb water again.

The EDA VASE mentioned above has a base made of lighter and more durable polycarbonate than glass, making water changes easy.

When your branches are looking droopy...

Cut the branches and enjoy them in a small vase.

Enjoy by cutting short

While most branches last relatively long, over time, they may absorb less water and start to look droopy. In such cases, try cutting them short and arranging them in separate, smaller displays.

Shortening them will make them absorb water more easily, and arranging them in different small vases will allow you to appreciate their fresh charm anew.

Trivia about Dodan Azalea

Dodan Azalea Trivia

Beautiful flowers named after a starry sky

Dodan azalea has the Kanji notation "満天星躑躅" (Mantenboshi Tsutsuji).

This is said to be an ateji (phonetic equivalent) given because the small white bell-shaped flowers of dodan azalea, when blooming profusely across the entire plant in spring, are as beautiful as a sky full of stars.

There is also a Chinese legend about this.

Long ago, when Taishang Laojun, a Daoist deity, was making elixirs, he accidentally spilled the spiritual water from a jade plate onto a dodan azalea, causing it to sparkle like a starry sky. From this legend, it is said that "満点星躑躅" came to be read as dodan azalea.

There is another unique episode related to "Mantenboshi."

Asteroid 6786, discovered in February 1991 at the Karasuyama Astronomical Observatory in Tochigi Prefecture, was named "Mantenboshi" (満天星), read as "Dodan Azalea."

Naming a star after a flower originating from a Chinese legend truly shows a sense of humor and romance◎

Dodan Azalea, very popular in summer

Available from May to September, its cute small leaves and refreshing appearance make it very popular as a summer interior decoration. Once adapted to the environment, it vigorously sprouts new leaves one after another, and with proper care, it can be enjoyed for a long time.

There are several types of Dodan Azalea, and the one popularly distributed as a branch plant with soft small leaves is said to be a variety called Aburatsutsuji. The Dodan Azalea varieties distributed for garden trees have firmer leaves and are different species.

Because it grows in natural forests where sunlight filters through, allowing it to develop a branch structure suitable for ornamental purposes, artificial cultivation is difficult, and it takes over 10 years for it to grow to 1 meter in height, making it a valuable branch plant.

Although the circulation volume is high, its popularity has surpassed it, leading to an increase in unit price in recent years.
