[Branch & Twig Guide | Winter] Miyajima Japanese White Pine + Petrified Willow

For the 2023 New Year, we've prepared a set of "Miyajima Goyomatsu (Japanese White Pine) + Sekika-yanagi (Contorted Willow)".

 

〈Miyajima Goyomatsu (Japanese White Pine)〉

An evergreen coniferous tree of the Pinaceae family, Pinus genus.

Pine trees with their roots still attached are called "Nebiki-matsu," and they carry the wishes of "being grounded" and "continuously growing."

The common way to decorate them is to wrap Japanese paper around the middle of the branch and tie a mizuhiki cord.

The distribution of pine, which is essential for New Year decorations, is quite special. Every December, a "Matsuchi" (pine market) auction is held exclusively for pine trees, where various buyers compete fiercely.

This "Miyajima Goyomatsu" was personally secured by SiKiTO's representative, who couldn't wait for the Matsuichi, by visiting "Hasegawa Hanashoen," a renowned producer in Ibaraki Prefecture.

The grafted silhouette is unique.

 

〈Sekika-yanagi (Contorted Willow)〉

A deciduous tall tree of the Salicaceae family, Salix genus. Sekika-yanagi is a contorted willow that has fasciated and hardened.

It is green in summer, but changes to a subdued brown color in autumn and winter. It is a distinctive branch that is popular in arrangements for its dynamic yet serene feel.
