Forsythia Flower Language

The flower language of forsythia is "hope," "expectation," and "concentration." These bright and powerful words are perfect for forsythia, which blooms with yellow flowers in spring, signaling the arrival of a new season.

"Hope" and "Expectation"

Forsythia blooms with radiant yellow flowers in spring, announcing the arrival of a new season. Its brightness is said to evoke feelings of hope and expectation for the future.

"Concentration"

The sight of forsythia blooming profusely on its branches symbolizes "concentration," representing single-minded effort toward a goal.

Forsythia, with its bright yellow flowers in early spring, is like the sun itself. All its flower meanings are positive, reflecting how forsythia brightens people's spirits.

Forsythia is also the birth flower for February 12th and March 22nd. Giving flowers to someone on their birthday would be a wonderful gesture.

How to Display Forsythia

Forsythia arranged in a vase

Forsythia branches grow long and gracefully curved as they mature. Simply arranging them in a minimalist vase allows you to enjoy their naturally dynamic branches.

Since the flowers are a vibrant yellow, it's best to choose a vase in a simple color that doesn't detract from the brightness of the flowers. ◎

Points to Note When Arranging in a Vase

When arranging, one important point is to cut the branches to an appropriate length if they are too long to fit the vase. As forsythia grows, its branches tend to droop, so if they are left too long, the overall balance may be lost, or they may become unruly.

Also, it's a good idea to remove any flowers that would be submerged in water at the bottom of the stem before arranging. This prevents the water quality in the vase from deteriorating and bacteria from multiplying.

Flowering branches are delicate. To enjoy them for as long as possible, please remember to recut the stems when changing the water.

Examples of Forsythia in Interior Decor

Forsythia is a branched plant that bears many small yellow flowers on slender branches. It branches out profusely and, when in bloom, can create a voluminous display, brightening up any space like a yellow flower field just by being simply arranged in a vase.

It matches both Japanese and Western aesthetics, so it would be interesting to change its image by combining it with other interior elements or by using different vase designs. ◎

How to Care for Forsythia

To enjoy forsythia branches for as long as possible, daily care is essential. Here are some basic care tips for branches.

Basic Care

1. Recut and hydrate on the day of receipt

Recutting

On the day you receive your branches, recut them before placing them in a vase. Recutting involves trimming the elongated branches or stems to tidy them up.

At this time, make a cross-shaped incision at the base and use a knife to peel away the bark from the surface of the stem. This exposes the vascular bundles near the surface, improving water absorption.

The key is to strip only the part that will be submerged in water.

To make the branches last even longer, it is recommended to arrange them in water with a freshness preservative.

■Freshness Preservative for Longer-Lasting Branches

Freshness Preservative

Would you like to try a freshness preservative to give your flowering branches the nutrients they need and keep the water in your vase clean? It helps to dissolve the sap at the cut ends, improving water absorption and is expected to make your branches last longer.

The special freshness preservative for branches is available here.

■Florist Knife for Better Water Absorption

2. Display branches in an appropriate location

Forsythia branches prefer a bright, well-ventilated, and cool location.

You can display them in bright spots indoors, such as in the living room or near a window.

3. Change the water frequently

Water change

It is recommended to change the water frequently before it becomes cloudy. Recutting the stems at this time will also help them absorb water better.

If there are any slimy parts, gently rub them off with your hand.

Cut short and enjoy in smaller arrangements

Branches enjoyed in smaller arrangements

As days pass, it gradually becomes harder for the branches to absorb water. In such cases, why not try cutting them shorter and arranging them in smaller pieces?

Shorter branches absorb water more easily, and smaller branches also have a different charm. You could display them on a table or cabinet. ◎

Be creative and enjoy your branches for a long time.

In his masterpiece poetry collection "Chieko-sho," forsythia flowers are depicted alongside memories of his beloved wife. The vivid yellow of the flowers, in particular, appears as a symbol heralding the arrival of spring.

Kotaro Takamura, who loved forsythia, planted this flower in the garden of his atelier. It is said that at his farewell ceremony, held in that atelier beside the flowers he loved, forsythia branches were laid upon his coffin.

From this, April 2nd, the day of Takamura's death, is known as "Rengyo-ki" (Forsythia Memorial Day) and is still commemorated.

How to Grow Forsythia

Forsythia blooms from March to April. It can grow to a height of about 1.5 to 3 meters and prefers sunny, well-ventilated locations. It can tolerate both cold and heat, so it is widely cultivated from Hokkaido to Kyushu.

Its cultivation as cut branches is thriving in prefectures like Nagano and Gunma. It is harvested at the bud stage and then forced to bloom in greenhouses before being shipped.

While it prefers humidity, it is also relatively drought-tolerant, making it easy to grow as a garden tree and popular among beginners. Forsythia is not particular about soil type and can grow in most soils, but well-drained soil is ideal.

Its beautiful spring blossoms, in particular, are cultivated in many homes and public spaces to add color to gardens.
