Known for its delicate, miniature-like branches and leaves, and beautiful, elegant purple flowers, the Kometsutsuji is a highly popular tree species.

Its adorable foliage and abundant blossoms make it a favorite.

Elegant Purple Small Flowers of the Kometsutsuji Bloom Delicately

Kometsutsuji (rice azalea) gets its name from its rice grain-like leaves, and its small purple flowers bloom from mid-March to April on the tips of its branches.

One theory is that both kanji characters for "azalea" (躑躅) contain the radical for "foot" because the plant's beauty makes people stop and admire it.

As a semi-deciduous tree, it's a popular species with many highlights throughout the year, including new shoots and autumn foliage.

This time, we have prepared a small size that fits snugly in the palm of your hand.

The pot color is "Asagiri" (morning mist), and the saucer is "Ai" (indigo), creating a sophisticated look with a striking contrast against the flowers.

When photographed in early February, there were signs of faintly reddish buds on the branch tips.

For healthy growth, indoor management alone might not be sufficient. It's best to keep it in a location with as much sunlight and ventilation as possible, and occasionally move it outdoors to maintain the tree's rhythm.

Especially in winter, ensuring it experiences temperatures below 10-5°C will promote flower bud formation.

"Seasons and Bonsai" in Spring features 7 varieties

For spring 2026, "Seasons and Bonsai" offers 7 varieties, all featuring spring flowers. All are limited in quantity.

Why not enjoy the sight of buds blooming after winter, all to yourself, at home?

① Miyama Kirishima Azalea (Small size)

Miyama Kirishima Azalea, an endemic species of azalea native to the volcanic high-altitude regions of Kyushu, Japan.

Its small leaves, fine branching, and excellent floriferousness make it a popular and hardy variety. The elegant deep pink flowers have a long blooming period and are a sight to behold.

Purchase here. (Pot color: Peach)

② Kometsutsuji (Small size)

Kometsutsuji, with leaves as small as rice grains. It blooms with pale purple flowers, lighter than those of Miyama Kirishima.

In winter, its leaves turn red due to the cold, but as a semi-deciduous tree, it does not completely lose its leaves. It displays a charming and endearing appearance throughout the year.

Purchase here. (Pot color: Asagiri)

③ Hakuchoge (Serissa japonica) (Medium size)

Hakuchoge, with its profusion of pure white small flowers, has a delicate charm that might remind you of childhood treasures.

As an evergreen, its variegated leaves can be enjoyed all year round.

Purchase here. (Pot color: Biwa)

④ Asahiyama Sakura (Medium size)

Asahiyama Sakura features strong, straight trunks and gorgeous double-blossom flowers.

You can fully enjoy the changing seasons—from blooming to foliage to leaf fall—all within a small pot.

Purchase here. (Pot color: Awayuki)

⑤ Jugatsuzakura (October Cherry) (Large size)

Jugatsuzakura, named for its blooming in autumn, is a two-season blooming cherry tree.

Even just a few pale pink flowers create an exceptional ambiance.

Purchase here. (Pot color: Wakakusa)

⑥ Shidarezakura (Weeping Cherry) (Large size)

Shidarezakura, with its drooping branches descended from Higan cherry, has been cherished as an elegant cherry blossom since ancient times.

It is becoming a rare species due to a decline in growers.

Purchase here. (Pot color: Hakutou)

⑦ Fuji (Wisteria) (Extra Large size)

Fuji (Wisteria) is magnificent with its elegant purple flowers blooming in rows.

The way the flower clusters cascade down like a waterfall from its deciduous form is mystically beautiful.
