The Miyama Kirishima azalea boasts spectacular flowers in passionate colors.

Its popularity stems from its small leaves, fine branching, and robust nature with abundant blooms.

The elegant deep pink flowers have a long blooming period and are quite a sight to behold.

Miyama Kirishima Azalea with small, dark pink flowers

Miyama Kirishima azaleas bloom with vibrant flowers around April, even in small pots.

It is said that the botanist Tomitaro Makino named it because it grows wild in the mountainous areas of the Kirishima region of Kyushu.

One theory for why both kanji characters for "azalea" (躑躅) have the "foot" radical is that their beauty makes one stop in their tracks.

One of its flower meanings is "passion." It seems to encourage the feeling of starting something new in the coming season.

The one we have prepared this time is a small size that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand.

The pot color "Peach" and the saucer color "Wakakusa" (fresh green) are lovely and enhance its nostalgic charm.

When photographed in early February, there were signs of buds on the branches.

It is a very hardy species and easy for beginners to grow. If growing indoors, placing it near a bright window is recommended. In winter, exposing it to cold temperatures helps regulate the tree's biorhythm, making it easier for flower buds and new shoots to develop.

"Seasons and Bonsai " features 7 tree species

The 2026 spring "Seasons and Bonsai" collection features 7 types of flowering plants perfect for spring. All are limited in quantity.

Why not enjoy the sight of buds blooming after winter in the comfort of your own home?

① Miyama Kirishima Azalea (small size)

The Miyama Kirishima azalea is an endemic Japanese species that grows only in the volcanic alpine regions of Kyushu.

It is popular for its small leaves, fine branching, excellent flowering, and hardiness. The elegant dark pink flowers have a long blooming period and are impressive to behold.

② Kometsutsuji (small size)

Kometsutsuji (rice azalea) has tiny leaves like grains of rice. It blooms with pale purple flowers, lighter than those of the Miyama Kirishima.

In winter, its leaves turn red due to the cold, but as it is a semi-deciduous tree, it does not completely lose its leaves. It displays a charming and endearing appearance throughout the year.

③ Hakuchoge (medium size)

The Hakuchoge, with its profusion of pure white small flowers, has a delicate charm that might remind you of a childhood treasure.

As an evergreen tree, its variegated foliage can be enjoyed all year round.

Purchase here. (Pot color: Biwa)

④ Asahiyama Cherry (medium size)

The Asahiyama cherry features powerful, straight trunks and gorgeous double-petaled flowers.

You can fully enjoy the changing seasons, from blooming to leafing and leaf fall, all within a small pot.

⑤ Jugatsuzakura (large size)

Jugatsuzakura is a twice-blooming cherry tree, named for its blooming in autumn (October).

Even just a few pale pink blossoms exude an exceptional elegance.

⑥ Shidarezakura (large size)

Shidarezakura (weeping cherry), with its drooping branches descended from the Higan cherry, has been cherished as an elegant cherry tree since ancient times.

It is becoming a rare species due to a decrease in growers.

Purchase here. (Pot color: Shirotou)

⑦ Wisteria (extra large size)

The wisteria, with its impressive rows of elegant purple flowers, is truly a sight to behold.

The way the flower spikes cascade like a waterfall from its deciduous form is mystically beautiful.
